Single Malt Atlas
A guide to Scotland's single malt whisky distilleries, mapped by flavour.
What is Single Malt Scotch?
Single malt Scotch whisky is made from malted barley at a single distillery in Scotland, distilled in copper pot stills and matured in oak casks for at least three years. It is one of the most regulated spirits in the world — every bottle tells you exactly where it was made and how long it was aged.
Scotland's six whisky regions each produce distinctive styles, shaped by local water, climate, peat and tradition. From the delicate floral malts of the Lowlands to the intensely smoky drams of Islay, there is extraordinary diversity within a single spirit category.
Six Flavour Dimensions
We map every expression across six tasting axes. Together they create a flavour fingerprint that lets you compare whiskies at a glance.
Campfire, charcoal, kipper. The signature of peat-fired kilns, strongest in Islay malts.
Earthy, mossy, medicinal. The taste of the land — decomposed heather and bog myrtle.
Orchard fruit, citrus, tropical notes. Often from bourbon cask maturation and long fermentation.
Heather, honey, blossom, grassy. Delicate top notes common in Highland and Lowland malts.
Cereal, biscuit, toffee, vanilla. The backbone of the spirit, amplified by cask influence.
Pepper, cinnamon, ginger, oak. Warmth and complexity, often from European oak casks.
